Many existing sports fields, sports surface and school playing fields have deteriorated during years of use. Often the areas started out as a “grass field” and therefore the old grass sward is now unable to support regular use and recover from the effects of play. Mole and rabbit activity can make matters far worse, leaving localised dips and hollows which can soon lead to an unsafe or unsuitable surface.

Some fields still have the rolling undulations remaining from the old ridge & furrow system of farming and pasture management. Poor drainage, water-logging and compaction are usually a problem on these sites. This will usually lead to poor grass coverage & large wear areas, weed infestation and restricted use during Winter months. During Summer months these areas often become hard baked, dry / cracked , bare and difficult to play on.

        

During recent years as school sports and outdoor activity becomes increasingly popular we find ourselves working more on existing fields and play surfaces. Each is an individual, and we must take into consideration many existing features and factors including the soil type, topography, levels etc.
